Emergency Preparedness Plan Summary
Definitions:
A "hurricane" has sustained winds exceeding 74 mph or greater, dangerously high water and rough seas.
A "hurricane watch" is issued by the National Weather Service when hurricane conditions are a real possibility in an area within 24-48 hours.
A "hurricane warning" is issued by the National Weather Service when a hurricane is expected within 24-36 hours. Begin precautionary action at once.
Before the hurricane:

Make sure you have the proper decal for re-entry to the island. You MUST have either a WDCA property owners decal or an Isle of Palms re-entry decal affixed to your windshield.

Devise a family emergency plan.

Assemble a survival kit.

Have enough food and water to last two weeks.

Plan for the safety of your pets (they are usually not allowed in shelters).
In the event of a hurricane:

After the hurricane:

Please remember you MUST have the proper WDCA decal or IOP decal affixed to your windshield for re-entry onto the Isle of Palms.

Stay where you are until you receive official confirmation form authorities that the storm is over and it is safe to return to the community.
